I Don’t Need Motivation. I Need Relief.
In my days as a leader, I often thought: I don’t need motivation. I need relief.
There’s no shortage of motivational content aimed at leaders.
Get focused. Reframe the challenge. Dig deeper. Push through.
But here’s the truth I don’t hear leaders say out loud:
Motivation isn’t the problem. It’s the lack of relief from the never-ending churn and burn.
Relief from constant decision-making. Relief from being the emotional container for everyone else. Relief from carrying responsibility without a pause button.
And that’s just at work.
It doesn’t include the hours of emotional labor spent supporting people outside of it.
When leaders say they’re “unmotivated,” it’s rarely a character or commitment issue.
It’s depletion.
Motivation assumes there’s energy left to access. Relief acknowledges there might not be.
And no amount of inspirational quotes will fix a system—or a life—that never lets you exhale.
This is the part that often gets missed in leadership conversations:
You don’t always need a new mindset. Sometimes you need space. Sometimes you need support. Sometimes you need fewer expectations—especially the ones you’ve placed on yourself.
If you’re feeling unmotivated, less passionate, or questioning your current situation, you’re not broken—and you’re not alone.
You might just need to determine what relief looks like for you.
Sometimes relief comes from having space to think out loud—with someone who understands the weight you’re carrying.
