Embracing Authenticity in Team Building

You know what I hate? Ice breakers. Any ice breaker. I don't like forced authenticity. I prefer to show up authentically, on my own terms.

When I led my teams, we established ground rules for team building. One of the key rules was "No ice breakers." The activities I organized were designed to inspire people to be themselves. They allowed everyone to express who they are in a way that felt comfortable.

Creative Team Activities

During COVID, I challenged my entire team to join our monthly virtual staff meeting wearing the craziest Halloween mask they could find. This mask represented who they were or what they felt comfortable conveying. We had an eagle, a fish, and even a hockey mask straight out of Friday the 13th.

For some, authenticity meant showing up without a mask but still participating by observing and laughing along with everyone else. And that was perfectly okay.

Holiday Gatherings: A Different Approach

Every holiday season, I sponsored a gathering for my direct reports and our clinical directors at my home.

The rules were simple:

  • No ice breakers (a given).

  • Block your calendars for the afternoon (yes, during "work hours," because we all know you put in your 40+ hours prior to Friday afternoon at 2 PM).

  • Prepare to simply be together with your teammates.

  • The party was funded by me, not the company. Therefore, this wasn't a work activity.

There was food, beverages, and karaoke. There was laughter and a genuine sense of relief. Thank goodness we could just be ourselves without the pressure to perform.

The Shift in Team Dynamics

Initially, during our first party, no one knew how to act without being told what to do. However, they quickly adapted. I believe everyone would agree that it was a much-needed gathering. It resulted in deeper bonding than any icebreaker could ever achieve.

Rethinking Team Trust and Camaraderie

So, what's the message for today? Be willing to think outside the box when it comes to building trust and camaraderie within your teams. It doesn't always have to involve icebreakers or trust falls.

It can look like Halloween masks, karaoke, lots of food, and a few adult beverages.

Conclusion: The Power of Authentic Connections

In conclusion, fostering authentic connections within your team can lead to stronger relationships and a more cohesive work environment. Embrace unconventional methods that allow your team members to express themselves freely.

Remember, the goal is to create an atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable being themselves. This approach can lead to a more engaged and productive team.

So, the next time you're planning a team-building activity, consider skipping the ice breakers. Instead, focus on creating an environment where everyone can truly be themselves.
